Invisalign® and Braces – Orthodontic Treatment for Southeastern Orange County

The functionality and aesthetic appeal of the mouth are largely dependant upon straight teeth. Straight teeth are less likely to suffer unusual wear, break, or cause jaw and bite problems. Properly aligned teeth are also easier to clean, thus decreasing the likelihood of plaque buildup, gum disease, cavities, and the systemic complications associated with inflammations. And for an attractive, dazzling smile, straight teeth are a must. Dr. Michael Tessier believes that children and adults alike should smile with confidence, so he offers both conventional braces and Invisalign® invisible braces to his Mission Viejo, Rancho Santa Margarita, and southern Orange County patients.

Invisalign®

Straight teeth are vitally important for healthy, radiant smiles. Sometimes the aesthetic problem posed by crooked teeth can be easily addressed with porcelain veneers. However, when tooth alignment problems are more significant, orthodontic treatment should be sought, regardless of the age of the patient. But oftentimes for adults, the time commitment and aesthetic inconvenience involved with orthodontic brackets bonded to the front surfaces of the teeth is simply not practical. Invisalign® invisible braces offer significant advantages over conventional braces in terms of the duration and noticeability of treatment. The Invisalign® system uses a series of computer-generated clear "aligners" that sequentially move the teeth .25mm each. Each tray is worn 22 hours a day for two weeks; then a new tray is used. Many people will not even know you're wearing them! Usually patients only have to wear the aligners for a year, whereas correction with conventional braces averages approximately 15 to 24 months. You take the Invisalign® aligners out to eat; you can eat more of what you want to eat; it's easier to keep the teeth clean than when wearing conventional brackets; and you can take them out if you need to, such as when you make an inaugural or valedictory speech. Braces

In addition to the Invisalign® system, Dr. Tessier offers orthodontic treatment with conventional braces to his patients from Mission Viejo, Rancho Santa Margarita, and surrounding areas. Although most patients would prefer to use Invisalign® aligners, they may not be the most appropriate solution for everyone. Young children are not eligible for Invisalign® because the procedure requires that second molars be fully developed before treatment can begin. This generally happens between the ages of 12 and 14. Braces, however, can be used to treat children as young as 10 years old effectively and safely.

Orthodontic treatment with conventional braces is now much more patient friendly than it used to be. In the past, many stainless steel bands were used to connect teeth to the main wire that straightened the teeth. Now, instead of unsightly bands, inconspicuous brackets are bonded to each tooth to attach each tooth to the straightening wire. Patients also have the option of clear or tooth-colored braces. In addition, technological advances have improved the wires that are used in conventional braces treatment. Wires are now made of materials that increase patient comfort and reduce treatment time.
